Wedding Venues in Vélez-Málaga

Vélez-Málaga is the main town of the Axarquía, the region east of Málaga that most visitors never reach. It sits a few kilometres inland from Torre del Mar, with a Moorish fortress above it and subtropical farmland all around.

This side of the province grows mangoes, avocados and custard apples, and the landscape is greener and more agricultural than the coast to the west of the city.

Why couples choose the Axarquía

It is the Costa del Sol without the crowds. The beaches east of Málaga see a fraction of the visitors of Marbella or Fuengirola, and prices for venues and accommodation reflect that.

The landscape is genuinely different. Terraced hillsides, subtropical orchards and white villages like Cómpeta and Frigiliana within easy reach give the area a character all of its own.

Nerja and its caves are half an hour east, and make an excellent excursion for guests staying several days.

Getting here

Málaga airport is around forty minutes by car. There is no train east of Málaga, so transport needs arranging.

The coastal road east of the city is quieter than the motorway west, which makes journey times more predictable.

When to marry here

May, June, September and October. This coast is slightly warmer than the western Costa del Sol in winter and holds its season a little longer into autumn.

The Axarquía is one of the sunniest parts of mainland Spain, which is worth knowing if you are marrying in the shoulder months.

Good to know

Fewer suppliers are based east of Málaga, so some travel from the city. It is manageable but worth building into the budget.

Accommodation is more limited and more dispersed than on the western coast, so block book early.

Inland villages here are steep and narrow, much like the pueblos further west. Check vehicle access before committing to a hillside venue.
