France is the strictest of the countries we work in. Civil marriage requires one party to have been resident in the commune for at least thirty days before the ceremony, which rules it out for almost every visiting couple.
Effectively every foreign wedding in France is symbolic, with the legal marriage completed at home beforehand. It is entirely normal and no guest will notice.
Getting here
Nice serves the Côte d'Azur, Marseille and Avignon serve Provence, and Bordeaux, Bergerac and Toulouse serve the south west. Eurostar and driving are realistic options for UK guests, which is rare among destination weddings.
Being drivable from the UK genuinely changes the guest list, since people can bring children, dogs and as much luggage as they like.
When to marry here
June and September are the sweet spots in the south, with July and August hot and busy. The Dordogne and Loire have a shorter reliable window, roughly late May to mid September.
The mistral blows down the Rhône valley in Provence, sometimes for days at a time, and it matters for marquees and outdoor lighting.
