Beach weddings in Spain are more regulated than couples expect. Public beaches need permission from the local ayuntamiento, permissions vary enormously between municipalities, and no permit anywhere gives you the right to clear sunbathers out of your photographs in August.
Beach clubs solve most of this. You get sand, sea and sunset with a licence, a kitchen, shade, loos and a defined area that is genuinely yours. We will tell you honestly which stretches of coast permit ceremonies, what the application actually involves, and where wind will be the thing that ruins the day rather than heat.

The Costa del Sol is where most of our beach weddings take place. Marbella and Estepona have the widest choice of beach clubs, from barefoot and relaxed to polished and very glamorous, and both are within an hour of Málaga airport. Further west, Sotogrande is quieter and more exclusive, with a marina and long, uncrowded sand.
The Atlantic coast of Cádiz, the Costa de la Luz, is wilder and more beautiful in a raw way: wide white beaches, dunes and pine woods. It is also windier, with properly tidal water and cooler sea, so it suits couples who want drama more than calm. East of Málaga, the towns towards Nerja offer smaller coves and a more local feel.

Spain's coastline offers four very different kinds of beach wedding. Knowing which one you want narrows the shortlist faster than anything else.
Polished, chic and full of energy. Private decks on the sand, terrace lounges, a pool for the day after and a licence for music late into the night. This is the classic Marbella beach wedding, and the easiest to plan, because the club handles almost everything.
Barefoot and free-spirited, with pampas grass, macramé, rugs on the sand and an acoustic guitar as the sun goes down. Ibiza and Mallorca are the home of the look, with cliff-backed coves and sea clubs, while Tarifa and the Atlantic coast bring the same mood with wilder beaches and big skies.
The most Spanish beach wedding of all. A family-run chiringuito right on the sand, fresh fish from the grill, paella in pans the size of cartwheels and guests in bare feet. It is relaxed, warm and deeply local, and it suits couples who would rather have a long, happy lunch than a grand production.
All the Mediterranean, without the sand in your shoes. Boutique hotel terraces, hidden coves and rocky viewpoints give you dramatic sea views, fewer crowds and often better value than the busiest beaches, with a little more shelter from the wind.

Sunset on the 15th of each month (5 October for early October), rounded to the nearest five minutes. The Canary Islands run an hour behind mainland Spain, which is why their clock times look earlier. July and August work at a beach club, but expect strong heat until early evening and busy sand around you.

Long-term averages from AEMET, Spain's State Meteorological Agency: Málaga Airport, Cádiz, Barcelona Airport, Valencia and Gran Canaria Airport for 1991 to 2020, and Ibiza Airport for 1981 to 2010. Beaches with a sea breeze often feel cooler than these readings in the evening.
The things that make the difference between a beautiful beach wedding and a stressful one.
A beach wedding gives you the sea and the sunset as your backdrop, a relaxed barefoot atmosphere and, at a beach club, everything in one place: kitchen, bar, shade, toilets and a licence. Guests get a holiday around the wedding, photographers get beautiful golden hour light, beachfront hotels make accommodation easy, and the Costa del Sol has reliable weather from May to October.
A civil marriage in Spain generally requires one partner to be resident, so most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the beach. It can be led by a celebrant and is as personal and as long as you wish.
On a public beach, yes. The coastline is public land, so an organised ceremony needs permission from the local town hall and sometimes the coastal authority. Rules vary by municipality. A private beach club or a hotel with its own beach is already licensed, which is why most couples choose one.
There are four main styles: polished beach club weddings on the Costa del Sol, boho beach weddings in the Balearics and on the Costa de la Luz, relaxed chiringuito weddings in Andalusia, and clifftop or sea view terrace weddings on the Costa Brava and in the hills above the coast. Each suits a different budget, guest count and atmosphere.
May, June, September and early October. The weather is warm and reliable, the sea is pleasant, and the beaches are far quieter than in July and August, when heat and crowds both peak.
Around two hours before sunset. In June that is around twenty to eight in the evening on the Costa del Sol, and by late September about ten past six. You get softer light, cooler guests and a sunset drinks reception straight afterwards.
On most of the Costa del Sol a light sea breeze is the norm and welcome in summer. Around the Strait of Gibraltar and on the Cádiz coast the levante wind can blow strongly for days, so we choose venues there with a sheltered alternative.
Most beach clubs on the Costa del Sol take between eighty and two hundred guests for a seated dinner, and some will close entirely for a wedding. Exclusive use depends on the day of the week and the season.
At a beach club, yes, often with tables set on the sand. On a public beach, receptions with catering, music and structures are rarely allowed, so couples usually move to a nearby venue after the ceremony.
Light fabrics, flat or wedge shoes, and something for the evening, when the breeze off the sea can feel cool. Many couples put flip flops at the end of the aisle, which guests are always grateful for. A short note in the invitation about footwear, the dress code and the exact meeting point saves a lot of questions.
Not necessarily. A small ceremony followed by lunch at a chiringuito can be one of the most affordable weddings in Spain. Costs rise when a beach needs everything brought in, such as chairs, shade, power, toilets and permits, which is why a beach club often works out better value than it first appears. As a guide, a full beach club wedding for around 100 guests on the Costa del Sol typically sits between €17,000 and €32,000.
Rain is rare on the Costa del Sol between May and October, but every beach wedding we plan has a weather alternative agreed from the start. That might be a covered terrace at the beach club, a stretch tent or an indoor room with sea views. We make the call with you on the morning, so guests never notice there was a plan B.
The Costa del Sol is the most popular, with warm weather, excellent beach clubs and easy flights from the UK and Ireland. The Costa de la Luz in Cádiz is wilder and more dramatic, the Balearic Islands suit relaxed boho weddings, the Costa Brava has beautiful coves for smaller celebrations, and the Canary Islands are warm enough for a beach wedding even in winter.
Yes, with the right expectations. The Costa del Sol often sees mild, sunny days through the winter, which suits a beach ceremony followed by a reception indoors or on a sheltered terrace. For guaranteed warmth, the Canary Islands are the better choice. Read our winter weddings guide for more.
It can be, with some planning. Choose a beach club or hotel with step-free access, lay matting over the sand for the aisle, keep the walk from the car short and reserve shaded, front-row seats for anyone who needs them. We check access at every venue before we recommend it.
Waves, wind and nearby beachgoers carry voices away more than couples expect. We always arrange a discreet microphone and speaker for the celebrant and for any readings, and position the ceremony so the wind is behind your guests rather than in their faces.
