Turkey is the value option among Mediterranean destinations, and the gap is substantial. The Aegean and Turquoise coasts give you pine covered hillsides running down to clear water, ancient ruins and excellent food, at costs well below Greece across the water.

The trade-off is a longer flight and a legal process that requires more preparation, both of which are manageable with notice.

Where to marry

Bodrum is the most established, a peninsula of whitewashed villages, bays and boutique hotels, with its own airport and a marina scene that suits guests staying several days.

Fethiye, Kalkan and the Turquoise coast are quieter and more dramatic, with venues on hillsides above the water and the ruins of Lycian cities nearby.

Çeşme and the coast west of Izmir are the least discovered by foreign couples and the best value of all.

The legal side

Foreign couples can marry legally in Turkey, but the process requires health certificates, translated and apostilled documents, and an application through the local municipality, and it takes longer to arrange than in Cyprus or Malta.

Most of our couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Turkey, which removes the complication entirely.

Getting here

Bodrum, Dalaman and Izmir all have direct seasonal flights from UK and Irish cities. The flight is around four hours, and transfers from Dalaman to the Kalkan area can take a further ninety minutes, so check both legs when comparing venues.

Flights are seasonal, so options thin considerably outside roughly May to October.

When to marry here

May, June, September and October. July and August are very hot on the Aegean coast, often above thirty five degrees, with warm nights.

September is the standout month here: the sea is at its warmest, the crowds have gone and the weather is still reliable.
