Year-round sunshine on Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with volcanic landscapes, Atlantic beaches and an honest guide to island logistics.
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, planned by a team who knows the islands, their weather and their seasons.
The Canary Islands are Spain, but they sit in the Atlantic off the coast of north-west Africa, and that gives them something no other part of Europe has: warm, settled weather almost all year. You can marry outdoors in February as comfortably as in June.
Each island has its own character. Tenerife has the most venues and Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak. Gran Canaria has golden dunes and green valleys. Lanzarote is volcanic, artistic and dry, and Fuerteventura is all long, wild beaches. The flight from the UK is longer than to mainland Spain, at around four and a half hours, so most guests make a holiday of it.
We plan weddings across the islands. See how our wedding planners Spain service and our wedding coordinators Spain team work, or browse all our wedding venues Spain.
The largest island has the widest choice of venues and the most flights. Its two halves feel very different, which matters when you choose where to marry.
Gran Canaria is often called a continent in miniature. The south has the Maspalomas dunes and long beaches with large resort hotels; the mountainous centre has pine forests and villages; and the north has Las Palmas, a proper city with a historic old quarter, Vegueta.
Why couples choose it: lots of flights, a wide range of hotels for every budget, and the option of a beach ceremony in the south with a rural finca or city venue an hour away.
Watch for: the north and the mountains can be cloudy when the south is sunny, so the location of the ceremony matters more than the date.
Lanzarote is the island for couples who want something different. The whole island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with black volcanic fields, white villages and green palm groves. The artist César Manrique shaped much of its look, and several of his works, built into lava caves and volcanic rock, are among the most unusual event settings in Europe.
It is also the driest of the main islands, which makes it a reliable choice in winter. Weddings here tend to be stylish and design-led, often at boutique hotels, rural estates or venues in the wine-growing region of La Geria.
Watch for: fewer traditional wedding venues than Tenerife or Gran Canaria, so the best ones book early.
Fuerteventura is about beaches: long stretches of white sand, the dunes of Corralejo in the north and the turquoise lagoons of the south. It suits relaxed beach weddings, elopements and couples who want space rather than a full resort.
Watch for: the island is windy, which is why it is loved by surfers and kitesurfers. Ceremonies need a sheltered spot, and veils, arches and hanging decorations need planning around the breeze.
The smaller western islands, La Palma and La Gomera, are green, quiet and dramatic, and suit elopements and very small weddings. La Gomera is a short ferry from southern Tenerife, so it works well as a day trip or a ceremony with the celebration on Tenerife.

The Canary Islands follow Spanish marriage law. A civil wedding in Spain usually requires at least one partner to be resident, and the paperwork can take months, so most couples from the UK and Ireland marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the island.
Requirements change, so we confirm the current position for your situation before you book.
Any month works, which is the whole point of the Canaries. Winter is mild and sunny, especially in the south of Tenerife and Gran Canaria and on Lanzarote, and summer is warm rather than scorching thanks to the trade winds.
Two things to plan around. The north of each island is cloudier and greener than the south, so choose the side of the island as carefully as the date. And occasionally the calima, a haze of Saharan dust, can soften the light and the views for a day or two.
Because the islands are a winter-sun destination, December to March is high season: hotels fill and prices hold. Late spring and autumn are often the best balance of weather and value. See our winter weddings guide.
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| December to March | Mild, sunny days; high season for winter-sun visitors |
| April to June | Warm, settled and good value |
| July & August | Warm, breezy, busy with summer holidays |
| September to November | Warmest sea, golden light, quieter |
The Canaries are usually better value than the Balearics, with plenty of hotels competing for weddings. Winter is their high season, so prices do not drop the way they do on the mainland.

Tenerife has the most venues and flights, and the sunniest weather in the south and west. Gran Canaria has the widest range of hotels and a mix of beaches, mountains and city. Lanzarote is the driest and most design-led, with volcanic scenery. Fuerteventura suits relaxed beach weddings, and La Palma and La Gomera suit elopements and very small weddings.

A civil wedding usually requires at least one partner to be resident in Spain, and the paperwork takes time, so most couples from the UK and Ireland marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the island. Around four and a half hours from most UK airports, with direct flights to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura all year. It is longer than a flight to mainland Spain, so most guests stay for several nights and make a holiday of it.
It can be, especially on Fuerteventura and on exposed coasts. The trade winds keep summers comfortable but need planning for ceremonies, veils, arches and hanging decorations. We look for sheltered ceremony spots and always have a plan for a breezy day.
Yes. Beach clubs, hotels and sea-view terraces are the easiest way, with the ceremony on their own terrace or beach area. Ceremonies on public beaches need local permission and usually have limits on numbers and set-up, so we arrange that or suggest a venue on the water instead.
