England has more wedding venues per square mile than almost anywhere, and the range runs from converted barns in the Cotswolds to Georgian country houses, London warehouses and clifftop hotels in Cornwall. The choice is the challenge.
Narrowing it down starts with one decision: do you want a weekend, a day, a city or a field? A country house weekend, a barn with a blank canvas, a city venue your guests can reach by train and a marquee in a family garden are four very different weddings, with very different budgets.

The legal side
Getting legally married in England
Licensed venues in England can host the legal ceremony, so you do not need a separate register office wedding. The key is to give notice in good time and to check the venue's licence covers exactly where you want to marry.
- Give notice: both of you, in person, at your local register office, at least 29 days before the wedding.
- Book the registrar: early, as summer Saturdays go fast. The registrar travels to your venue.
- Check the licence: it must cover the room or outdoor space you want, as not every garden or structure is approved.
- Religious weddings: follow their own rules, so speak to your church or faith leader.
Rules can change, so check the current requirements with your local register office before you book.
Best time to marry
When to get married in England
May to September is the reliable window, with June and September the sweet spots for weather and daylight. Peak Saturdays at good venues book eighteen months out.

England is the most expensive part of the UK for weddings, and London more expensive again. Across the UK, the average wedding costs £20,604 and venue hire averages around £6,040 before catering (Bridebook, 2026). Barns look cheaper on the venue line and rarely are once catering, furniture, staff, lighting and toilets are added, so cost the whole wedding before comparing.
