Golf club weddings

Golf club wedding venues across the UK, Europe and beyond

Golf clubs are one of the most underrated wedding venues, largely because couples assume they will feel corporate. The good ones do not. They offer mature planting, long clean sightlines, generous indoor function space for weather cover and, almost always, far more parking than a finca or a villa.

They also tend to come with experienced in-house catering and a licence that already covers large numbers, which simplifies a great deal. The trade-off is a members' diary to work around, so dates get held earlier here than anywhere else. We know which clubs welcome weddings properly and which merely tolerate them.

What you get

What a golf club gives your wedding

The grounds are the obvious draw. Golf courses are landscaped and maintained to a standard few private venues can match: wide fairways, mature trees, water features and long views to the sea or the mountains. Photographs on the course at golden hour are hard to beat, and most clubs allow them with a little notice.

Behind the scenes, a clubhouse is a working hospitality building. It has a professional kitchen, a bar, toilets for large numbers, step-free access and indoor space if the weather turns. Ceremonies usually take place on a terrace or lawn overlooking the course, with drinks outside and dinner on the terrace or in the clubhouse restaurant.

If you would like to combine golf with a country estate, Finca Monasterio is about fifteen minutes from the golf at Sotogrande, with thirty two rooms and five acres of gardens of its own.

The running order

How a golf club wedding usually runs

Most clubs hold weddings once play has finished nearby, which shapes the day. This is the timeline we plan around.

1

Afternoon

Play finishes on the holes near the clubhouse. We confirm tee times with the club in advance.

2

Ceremony

On the terrace or a lawn overlooking the course, facing away from the low sun.

3

Golden hour

Drinks on the terrace while buggies take you out on the course for photographs.

4

Dinner

On the terrace or in the clubhouse, with indoor space doubling as weather cover.

5

Dancing

Until the agreed finish time, which can be earlier where the course sits close to homes.

The wedding weekend

Golf for your guests

A golf wedding gives guests something to do either side of the big day, which makes the trip feel like a holiday rather than a single event.

A friendly competition

A relaxed pairs event or a groom's party competition, with a small trophy for the winners and the losers buying the first round.

Lessons for beginners

A group lesson with the club professional, so guests who have never played can join in without feeling out of their depth.

Tee times and transport

We book tee times at the wedding venue or nearby courses, and arrange transport there and back so nobody has to drive.

For non-golfers

Spa days, beach clubs, boat trips and tapas tours, so everyone has something they will enjoy while the golfers are out.

Light and temperature

Sunset and summer temperatures, by destination

Golden hour photographs on the course are the highlight of a golf club wedding. These figures show when that light arrives and how warm the evening will be in each golf destination.

Before you book

The things to check first

Golf clubs are excellent wedding venues, but they are members' clubs first. These are the questions we ask on your behalf.

Ask the club Questions to ask

Availability and space

  • Which dates are free of member competitions?
  • Will play finish near the clubhouse before the ceremony?
  • Which terraces and rooms are ours alone?
  • Can we take photographs out on the course?
  • Are there hotel rooms on site or close by?
Plan for

The rules and limits

  • Weekend dates in spring and autumn go first
  • Terraces may be shared with the club restaurant
  • Earlier finish times where homes are nearby
  • In-house catering is usually required
  • Fees for some outside suppliers

The best golf club weddings are planned around the course, not in spite of it. Ask for the date early, and the club becomes the easiest venue you will ever work with.

Good to know

Golf club weddings, answered

Why get married at a golf club?

+

Golf clubs combine beautifully kept grounds with practical advantages: a professional kitchen, a licensed bar, indoor space for bad weather, step-free access and plenty of parking. Many are part of resorts with rooms, and guests can play golf across the weekend.

Where are the best golf wedding venues in Spain?

+

The Costa del Sol has the greatest choice, with around seventy courses between Málaga and Sotogrande, especially around Marbella, Mijas, Estepona, Casares and Sotogrande. The Algarve in Portugal is a good alternative.

Can we take photographs on the golf course?

+

Usually, yes. Most clubs allow photographs on the course with notice and at times that do not interfere with play. Buggies make it easy to reach the best viewpoints at golden hour.

Are golf clubs available at weekends?

+

Members come first, so Saturdays in spring and autumn are the hardest to secure. Weekdays and Sundays are easier, and some clubs only host weddings after play has finished. Book early if you want a specific date.

Can we use our own caterer at a golf club?

+

Most clubs require you to use their in-house catering, which is usually experienced at weddings. Outside suppliers such as photographers, florists and bands are generally welcome, sometimes for a fee.

Can you arrange golf for our wedding guests?

+

Yes. We can book tee times, a friendly competition for the wedding party or lessons for beginners, either at the wedding venue or at nearby courses, and arrange transport to and from them.

What are the benefits of a golf club wedding venue?

+

Golf clubs combine beautifully kept grounds with practical advantages: a professional kitchen and licensed bar, indoor space for bad weather, plenty of parking and step-free access. Many are part of resorts with rooms on site, the course makes a stunning backdrop for photographs, and guests can play golf across the wedding weekend.

Can guests who do not play golf enjoy a golf club wedding?

+

Absolutely. The wedding itself happens on the terraces and in the clubhouse, not on the course. For the days either side, we arrange spa visits, beach clubs, boat trips and tours for non-golfers while the golfers play.
