Mountain weddings

Mountain view wedding venues across the UK, Europe and beyond

Inland and mountain venues trade the sea for three things couples come to value more: cooler evenings, genuine privacy and better value than the coast for the same quality of setting. In July and August, a fresh evening in the hills is the difference between dancing outside and hiding indoors.

The considerations are access and transport. Roads can be narrow, suppliers charge for distance, and guests will need coaches rather than taxis. We plan the logistics first so the saving on the venue is a real saving and not just a cost moved somewhere else.

Mountain wedding destinations

Andalusia is one of the most mountainous regions of Spain, and the ranges rise steeply only a few kilometres behind the coast. These are the areas we know best, plus the UK's own mountains.

Lochs, fells and mountain lodges

The UK's mountains offer some of the most atmospheric wedding settings anywhere: castles above Highland lochs, country house hotels in the Lake District and lodges in the shadow of Snowdon. Long summer evenings, with light until ten in Scotland in June, and indoor rooms with the view for every kind of weather.

Why go inland

Cooler evenings, real privacy, better value

Height brings fresher air after dark. Inland, summer nights are several degrees cooler than on the coast, and the difference is most welcome once the sun has gone down, when the coast can stay warm and humid. It is worth knowing that inland afternoons can actually be hotter than the beach, which is why we plan the ceremony late and keep guests in the shade until the heat breaks.

It is also quieter. There are no beach bars, no traffic and no neighbours at the next table, which makes a mountain venue feel truly private. And venue hire, accommodation and even some supplier costs are often lower inland, so the same budget stretches further.

Castillo de Monda is a restored castle above the village of Monda, looking out over olive valleys to the distant Mediterranean, with thirty five rooms and no sound curfew. Casa de la Era sits in the hills above Marbella with sea and mountain views, and near Sotogrande, Finca Monasterio looks across olive groves to the hills.

Coast or country

Mountain venue or coastal venue?

Both are wonderful. The right choice depends on what matters most to you and your guests.

Mountain or inland Head for the hills

Private and fresh

  • Cooler, fresher evenings and nights
  • High privacy, with no neighbours or beach bars
  • Venue and room prices usually lower
  • Views across valleys, peaks and the distant sea
  • Coaches essential for guests
  • Higher supplier travel costs
Stay by the sea

Easy and sociable

  • The sea up close, with beach days for guests
  • Taxis often fine, with hotels nearby
  • Lower supplier travel costs
  • Warm, often humid summer nights
  • Busier, with less privacy
  • Venue and room prices usually higher

Inland afternoons can be hotter than the beach. It is the evenings that win, so we time the ceremony late and let the hills do the rest.

Why the mountains

Benefits of a mountain view wedding venue

Wedding guests enjoying a long outdoor lunch under paper lanterns, overlooking green wooded hills and valleys
Long lunches with the hills all around

Cooler evenings

Nights in the hills are several degrees fresher than on the coast in high summer.

Real privacy

No beach bars, no traffic and no neighbours at the next table.

Better value

Venue hire and accommodation are usually lower than on the coast.

Dramatic views

Valleys, peaks and the distant sea that change colour through the evening.

Character venues

Castles, haciendas and fincas with centuries of history.

Starry skies

Far less light pollution, so dinner happens under a sky full of stars.

Golden hour colour

Low sun across the hills gives photographers rich, warm light.

Still close to the coast

Many venues are thirty to forty five minutes from the beach and the airport.

Light and temperature

Coast versus mountains, in numbers

The figures show what mountain weddings are really like. Inland Andalusia is hotter than the coast by day, but far cooler at night, which is why a late ceremony and dinner under the stars work so well in the hills.

In July, inland nights are about five degrees cooler than the coast.

Planning a mountain wedding

The practical side

Mountain venues reward good planning. These are the four things we sort out first.

Guest transport

Mountain roads are winding, taxis are scarce late at night and nobody should drive. A coach for the main group and minibuses for steeper drives is safest and usually cheapest.

Access

Narrow lanes, steep drives and tight bends shape what suppliers can bring in. We check vehicle access before anything is booked.

Supplier travel

Caterers, hire companies and entertainers charge for distance and time. It rarely outweighs the saving on the venue, but it belongs in the budget from day one.

Evening chill

Temperatures drop quickly once the sun disappears behind the ridge. Wraps, blankets and patio heaters, or a covered space for dancing, keep the party going.

Good to know

Mountain weddings, answered

Why choose a mountain wedding venue in Spain?

+

Cooler evenings and nights in summer, privacy away from the busy coast and better value for the same quality of venue. Many mountain venues in Andalusia are still within thirty to forty five minutes of the beaches and Málaga airport.

How much cooler is it in the mountains?

+

Evenings and nights are where the mountains win. In July the average overnight low is about 16°C at Granada in inland Andalusia, against 21°C on the coast at Málaga. Inland afternoons can actually be hotter than the coast, so we plan the ceremony late and keep guests in the shade until the heat breaks. In spring and autumn it can feel fresh after sunset, so plan wraps, blankets or heaters.

How do guests get to a mountain wedding venue?

+

By coach and minibus. Mountain roads are winding, taxis are scarce late at night and nobody should drive after a wedding. We arrange transport from the hotels to the venue and back.

Are mountain venues cheaper than the coast?

+

Often, yes. Venue hire and accommodation are usually lower inland, although suppliers charge more for travel. Overall, most couples find the same budget goes further.

Where are the best mountain wedding venues in Andalusia?

+

The hills above Marbella and Monda, the Serranía de Ronda, the countryside around Antequera, and Mijas on the mountainside above Fuengirola. Each offers a different mix of views, character and distance from the coast.

Can we have a mountain view and a sea view?

+

Yes. Many venues in the hills above the Costa del Sol look across the mountains to the sea, so you get both. Casa de la Era above Marbella and Castillo de Monda both look out towards the Mediterranean.

What are the benefits of a mountain view wedding venue?

+

Mountain venues give you cooler evenings in high summer, real privacy away from the busy coast and better value for venues and accommodation. You also get dramatic views across valleys and peaks, characterful castles and haciendas, starry skies with little light pollution, and many venues are still within thirty to forty five minutes of the beach and the airport.

Can we have a mountain wedding in the UK?

+

Yes. The Scottish Highlands, the Lake District and Snowdonia all have castles, country house hotels and lodges licensed for ceremonies, with dramatic views and long summer evenings. In June the sun sets after ten in the Highlands. The weather is changeable, so we always choose venues with an indoor room that keeps the view.
