Puglia is the heel of Italy, and for a long time it was the part most people flew over. That has changed, but not so much that it feels crowded. The landscape is flat, dry and covered in olive trees, some of them a thousand years old, and the towns are the colour of bone in the sunlight.
What draws couples here is a particular kind of building. The masseria is a fortified farmhouse, whitewashed, built around a courtyard, and there are hundreds of them across the region, many restored into places you can take over entirely for a few days. Add the trulli of the Valle d'Itria with their conical stone roofs, the baroque stonework of Lecce and a coastline on two seas, and you have a region that photographs unlike anywhere else in Italy.
It is also the best value in the country. A masseria wedding in Puglia costs meaningfully less than the equivalent in Tuscany or on Lake Como, and the food and wine are every bit as good.

The region runs a long way north to south. These are the parts our couples ask about most.
Ostuni
The white city on a hill above the olive plain, with masserie all around it and the sea twenty minutes away. The most popular base for Puglian weddings.
Valle d'Itria
Trulli country, between Locorotondo, Cisternino and Alberobello. Conical stone roofs, dry-stone walls and some of the loveliest small venues in the region.
Lecce & the Salento
Baroque Lecce, all carved honey-coloured stone, with the Salento peninsula and its beaches running south towards the tip of the heel.
Monopoli & Polignano a Mare
Two coastal towns on the Adriatic, one a working harbour and the other built on a cliff above a cove. Good for seafront receptions.
Fasano & Savelletri
Where the smartest resorts and the grandest masserie sit, close to the coast and to Bari airport.
Gallipoli & the Ionian coast
The other side of the heel, with softer beaches and warmer water, and a slightly more relaxed feel than the Adriatic side.
Ostuni, the Valle d'Itria and Fasano are the practical choices for most weddings, all within an hour of Bari or Brindisi. The deep Salento is beautiful but adds another hour of driving for guests.

Timing
Best time of year and day to marry in Puglia
Puglia runs warmer than central Italy and the season is longer. May, June, September and early October are the months we recommend: hot enough to be outside all evening, without the ferocity of high summer. These are average daytime highs.

● Our couples' favourite months. July and August regularly pass 32 degrees and the coast fills with Italian holidaymakers, so venues and hotels are both busier and dearer. Note too that much of Italy closes around Ferragosto in mid-August, suppliers included.
The best time of day
There is very little natural shade in the olive plain, and the sun is hardest from around one o'clock until four.
We plan the ceremony for the late afternoon, so the heat has broken and the stone has turned gold. Dinner then runs into the evening, which is when Puglia is at its best.

Why choose Puglia over Tuscany or Lake Como?

Mostly value and character. A masseria wedding in Puglia typically costs a good deal less than the equivalent in Tuscany or on the Lakes, and the buildings are quite different: whitewashed farmhouses and conical trulli rather than frescoed villas. It is also less booked, so you have more chance of the date you want.
What is a masseria?

A fortified farmhouse, usually whitewashed and built around a courtyard, originally the centre of a working estate. Many have been restored as small hotels or exclusive-use properties, with rooms, a pool and olive groves around them. They are the reason most couples come to Puglia, and they make a wedding feel like a house party rather than an event.
Which airport should our guests fly into?

Bari or Brindisi. Both take direct flights from the UK and across Europe, and most wedding venues sit within an hour of one or the other. Brindisi is usually closer for Ostuni, the Valle d'Itria and the Salento; Bari suits the north of the region. We arrange transfers for the whole party.
Can we legally marry in Puglia?

Yes, though the paperwork for foreign couples in Italy is particular and varies by comune. Many couples handle the legal formality at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here, which gives complete freedom over the setting. Others marry legally in Italy, which is entirely possible with enough notice. We handle either.
What is the best month for a Puglia wedding?

May, June, September and early October. Daytime highs sit between 23 and 29 degrees, warm enough for an outdoor evening without the 32 degrees of July and August. April is lovely and quieter, with slightly more chance of rain.
Is there enough shade?

That is the right question to ask here. The olive plain is flat and open, and many masserie have courtyards that trap heat in the afternoon. It is one of the first things we check on a viewing: where the shade falls at four o'clock, and whether a ceremony space works at the hour you want it.
Can our guests stay at the venue?

Usually, yes. Most masserie come with rooms and exclusive use generally includes them, which is a large part of the appeal: no transfers at midnight and breakfast together the next morning. Larger parties overflow into hotels nearby, which we book and arrange transport for.
What does a wedding in Puglia cost?

Exclusive-use venue hire commonly runs between €5,000 and €10,000, and a wedding of around a hundred guests typically lands between €35,000 and €50,000 all in. That is noticeably below Tuscany and well below Lake Como. We build you an itemised budget before you commit to anything.
