Why Malta
Wedding venues in Malta, the easy Mediterranean wedding
Malta is the practical choice among Mediterranean destinations, and it is underrated for it. English is an official language, the legal process for foreign couples is among the most straightforward in Europe, and the island is small enough that nothing is more than about forty minutes from anything else.
It also has settings you will not find elsewhere: baroque palazzos, limestone bastions, the Grand Harbour, and Mdina, a walled medieval city that is almost entirely silent after dark. Gozo, the quieter sister island, is a short ferry away.

The legal side
Getting legally married in Malta
Foreign couples can marry legally in Malta with no residency requirement, and because English is an official language, the paperwork and the ceremony are both in a language you understand. It is genuinely simpler than Spain, Italy or Greece.
- Request the banns: submit the request for the publication of banns to the Public Registry at least six weeks before the wedding. You can do this by post from abroad.
- Documents: passports, birth certificates and proof that you are free to marry, with any previous divorce or death certificate. UK documents need an apostille.
- Translations: only for documents not already in English or Maltese.
- Where: civil ceremonies can take place at the Marriage Registry or at approved venues such as hotels, gardens and historic sites. Religious weddings take place in a licensed church.

Best time to marry
When to get married in Malta
May, June, September and October. Malta is hot and dry in July and August, with very little shade in the limestone landscape, and reflected heat is real, so plan for it properly in summer.
The season runs longer than most of the Mediterranean thanks to Malta's southerly position, and with direct flights from the UK and Ireland all year round, April and November are workable for a daytime celebration too.
