Portugal has become one of the most requested destinations we work in, and the reason is straightforward: it is beautiful, it is friendly to foreign couples marrying there, and it costs less than Spain, Italy or France for a comparable day.
It also offers three quite different weddings depending on where you go. The Algarve for the coast, Lisbon and Sintra for palaces and city, and the Douro for vineyards and river valleys.
Why get married in Portugal?

Portugal is more accommodating than Spain. Foreign couples can marry legally there without a residency requirement, through the Conservatória do Registo Civil, though the paperwork takes preparation and documents need translating and apostilling.
That said, many couples still choose a symbolic ceremony and handle the legal marriage at home, simply because it removes a layer of admin. Both routes work here, which is not the case everywhere.

Flights and transfers
Faro serves the Algarve with direct flights from most UK and Irish cities. Lisbon serves Sintra and the centre, and Porto serves the Douro, around an hour and a half from the valley itself.
Portugal is generally an easier and cheaper flight than Italy or Greece from the UK, which matters when you are asking a hundred people to travel.
When to marry here
May, June, September and early October across all three regions. The Algarve holds a longer season than most of Europe and April and late October are both viable.
The Atlantic makes Portugal cooler and breezier than the Spanish Mediterranean, which is welcome in summer and worth planning for outdoors.
How much does a wedding in Portugal cost?
Portugal is the best value of the western European destinations we work in, and the gap is real rather than marginal. A comparable day costs meaningfully less here than in Spain, and considerably less than in Italy or France.
As a broad guide, a Portuguese wedding for around a hundred guests tends to land between €18,000 and €28,000, against roughly €25,000 to €32,000 for the Spanish equivalent. Venue hire and catering will account for around half of whatever you spend.

Two things move the number more than anything else. Guest numbers, obviously, and region: the Algarve in peak summer prices quite differently from the Douro in September. Marrying midweek or outside July and August softens venue pricing noticeably, as it does everywhere.

Can foreign couples marry legally in Portugal?

How far in advance should we book?

Twelve to eighteen months for a peak season Saturday, particularly in the Algarve and Sintra where the best venues go early. Shorter timelines are workable and we have planned lovely weddings in five or six months, but it narrows the choice of venue and date rather than the quality of the day.
Do we need to speak Portuguese?

No. English is widely spoken across the Algarve and Lisbon in particular, and we handle every supplier conversation on your behalf in any case. Where documents need translating for a legal marriage, we arrange that as part of the process.
What is a quinta?
+
A Portuguese country estate or farmhouse, often with land, outbuildings and sometimes accommodation. Quintas are the most characteristic wedding venue in Portugal, from orange grove estates in the Algarve to port houses in the Douro, and they usually allow far more freedom than a hotel.
Can guests stay at the venue?

At many quintas, yes, which is one of the real advantages of a Portuguese wedding. Having some or all of your party on site turns the day into a weekend and removes a large part of the transport problem. Numbers vary considerably, so tell us early if it matters to you.
Is the Algarve too touristy?

Parts of it are, in July and August. The venues we work with sit away from the resort strips, in the hills behind the coast or on quieter stretches of cliff. Marrying in May, June, September or October avoids the busiest weeks entirely.
How do guests get around?

Most Portuguese venues are rural, so plan transport rather than assuming taxis. Coaches from a central hotel are the simplest arrangement and usually cheaper than the alternative. The Algarve is well served by hire cars if guests prefer independence.
Do you plan weddings across all of Portugal?

Yes, from the Algarve to Lisbon, Sintra and the Douro valley. We source and visit venues, brief suppliers and run the day itself, exactly as we do in Spain, so you can plan the whole thing from home with someone on the ground at every stage.
