Croatia gives you a coastline of a thousand islands, medieval walled cities and water clear enough to see the bottom from a terrace. It has become one of the fastest growing destination wedding countries in Europe, and deservedly so.

The Dalmatian coast is the focus for most couples: Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar and the islands between them.

Where to marry

Dubrovnik is the headline. The old town within the walls is extraordinary, and there are terraces and villas above it looking down over the terracotta roofs and out to Lokrum island. It is also the busiest and most expensive part of the country.

Split and the Riviera around it offer a Roman palace at the heart of a working city, with easier logistics and lower costs than Dubrovnik.

Hvar, Brač and Korčula give you island weddings with lavender fields, stone villages and vineyards, at the cost of an extra ferry leg for guests.

The legal side

Foreign couples can marry legally in Croatia without a residency requirement, through the local registry office. Documents need translating and apostilling, and the process takes preparation but is manageable.

Many couples still opt for a symbolic ceremony with the legal marriage completed at home, particularly where the venue is on an island and the registry office is not.

Getting here

Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar all have airports with direct seasonal flights from the UK and Ireland. Flight availability drops sharply outside the summer season, which affects date choice more than in Spain.

Island venues add a ferry or boat transfer. It is part of the charm and it needs building into the timeline properly, including for suppliers and equipment.

When to marry here

June and September are ideal. July and August are hot and extremely busy, particularly Dubrovnik, where cruise ship arrivals fill the old town during the day.

The season is shorter than Spain's. May and October are viable but flight options thin out, which matters for guests.
