Gibraltar is British territory at the western end of the Costa del Sol, around forty minutes from Estepona, and it solves the problem that stops most couples marrying legally in Spain. It uses English law and the English language, and visiting couples only need to stay one night.
That makes it the practical answer for couples who want a legally binding wedding and a Spanish celebration in the same trip. Many marry at the Registry Office or the Mayor's Parlour in Gibraltar, then hold the wedding they really wanted at a venue in Spain the same week. Others marry on the Rock itself, in St Michael's Cave or at an approved hotel.

From an intimate Registry Office wedding to a ceremony inside the Rock itself.
Open-air ceremonies need an approved indoor alternative in case of bad weather. There are no ceremonies at Easter, in the week before Christmas or on Gibraltar public holidays.
The most popular plan: a small legal ceremony in Gibraltar with your closest family, then the full wedding at a venue on the Spanish side a day or two later, often with a symbolic ceremony so all your guests see you say your vows.
The nearest Spanish venues are minutes away in San Roque and Sotogrande, with Manilva, Casares, Estepona and Marbella within the hour, and Cádiz province to the west.
We coordinate both days together, including transport across the border, which can queue at busy times, so build in extra time.
Year round, which is unusual. Winters are mild, and in summer the Levante cloud that forms over the Rock often keeps temperatures a little lower than the nearby coast.
That same cloud can sit over the Rock for days, so if photographs on the summit matter to you, have a plan B. Gibraltar is small and venue availability is limited, especially in summer, so book your ceremony slot early.

The official fees are modest. On top come the affidavit (paid to the Commissioner for Oaths or Notary), at least one night's accommodation and the cost of your celebration.

Yes. Visiting couples marry by Special Licence through Gibraltar's Civil Status and Registration Office. The ceremony is in English and you only need to stay one night in Gibraltar, immediately before or after the ceremony.
Original passports or ID cards, full birth certificates showing your parents' names and, if relevant, the final divorce decree or a late spouse's death certificate. Photocopies and scans are not accepted, and documents not in English need a certified translation. You also swear an affidavit in Gibraltar before a Commissioner for Oaths or Notary Public.
Spain usually requires one partner to be resident for a civil wedding, which rules it out for most visiting couples. Gibraltar has no such barrier, so many couples marry legally there and hold their celebration at a venue on the Costa del Sol the same week.
At the Registry Office in City Hall (up to 30 people), the Mayor's Parlour (up to 80), St Michael's Cave for evening ceremonies, or an approved outside venue such as a hotel, on weekday evenings and Saturdays. Open-air ceremonies need an approved indoor alternative.
The Special Licence is £124 and a Registry Office ceremony £186.50, or £309.50 at an outside venue on a weekday evening or Saturday, with the Mayor's Parlour venue fee of £372 on top if you choose it (Gibraltar Government, August 2026). Add the affidavit fee, your night's accommodation and certificates at £37 each.
